Emotional existentialism. Doctrinal dogmaticism. Both are IDOLATRY.
“You must love the Lord yourGod with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
“But the time is coming – indeed it’s here now – when the true worshippers will worsip the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way.” (John 4:23)
I think Piper is spot on. If love of the pursuit of a worship experience trumps our deep love of God Himself, we are guilty of idolatry. If love of the study of theology and protection of doctrinal purity trumps our deep love of God Himself, we are guilty of idolatry.
Both freedom to abandon ourselves in worship and a deep understanding of Scriptural truth are marks of maturity in a disciple of Jesus Christ. But if you strip everything else away, what really matters is this:
Do you – right now – have a deep and growing love for God?
